While the primary focus of CRS is elementary science learning, middle schools have begun seeking our support too!
Currently, CRS provides a limited amount of middle school science support, aimed at providing information and customized support to teachers in Berkeley Unified School District. We also serve as the organizational hub of the Math, Science, and Engineering Resource Support (MASERS) Program at Piedmont Middle School.
MASERS is a multi-year pilot partnership of Piedmont Middle School, CRS, and Piedmont parents Richard Saykally, UC-Berkeley professor of Chemistry, and Adam Thacher, founder of Thacher Executive Search. In a unique model designed to integrate well with middle school teachers' highly structured curriculum and dedicated science classes, MASERS volunteer teams present day-long science lessons for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students. Presenting to several classes in a row during the course of a day, volunteers describe the experience as intense but incredibly rewarding.
We are also in the process expanding our middle school volunteer opportunities in Berkeley, following a successful pilot project at Willard Middle School during the 2010-11 school year. To learn more about volunteering to make science presentations to 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students, e-mail teach@crscience.org.
